VegWorcester has been busy this year and we thought we’d share some of the projects we’ve been workin on…

WINTER/SPRING 2011: Last winter we had a small awesome group putting together the entire 2011 WorcesterVegFest. Our group met weekly, organizing everything to do with a kick-ass vegan festival for about 3,000 people. We had several fundraising events, including the wildly popular Mac Daddy Vegan Mac n Cheeze Cook-off. A bunch of volunteers stepped up to help as the event crept closer. VegFest was a lot of work but a huge success with tons of positive feedback and we surely made an impact on the city. After the VegFest, VegWorcester members kept meeting weekly and talked about using the VegFest momentum to focus our ideas into action! Oh yeah, and we legalized bake sales in Worcester.

SUMMER 2011: We started a monthly general meeting as a way to connect our super volunteers and also as a way to get fresh ideas from the vegetarian community around us. We focused our efforts on creating and editing the 2011 Worcester Veg Dining Guide and fundraising for the summer printing. We raised $500 thanks to our friends and supporters who gave generously to get the word out about veg eats in our city! At our monthly meetings, we decided to combine various outreach methods into one tool, (the guide.) Our plan: By leafleting the dining guide along with outreach pamphlets (like these), we’d promote & support local veg-friendly businesses, inform people about animal cruelty horrors like factory farming, provide ideas for vegan meals, and spread the word about our group. In August we printed 5,000 copies and started distribution of the dining guide! We also took part in veg-related movie showings and other Worcester events like the monthly Loving Hut buffet fundraisers.

UPCOMING FALL 2011 FOCUS: VegWorcester is gearing up for some major fall festival outreach, college campus outreach, and a second printing of the dining guide. Its gonna be sweet. We’re also planning events like veg movie showings, potlucks, a tasty holiday cookie swap, and even getting ready to start brainstorming for next year’s VegFest! Yes, we said it. But more about all that soon!

WANT TO HELP? LOVE BEING VEG? ARE YOU AWESOME? Join us September 20th for our monthly general meeting! Keep up to date with events by joining our email list, subscribing to our blog, and “liking” our Facebook page. Thank you for the continued community support and for all the amazing work our volunteers are doing to get the word out about compassion for ALL animals.

Tonight a couple of us from VegWorcester joined the Humane League of Boston to give out leaflets at the MA stop of the Warped Tour. There were so many kids at this concert and they were so positive. It was amazing. By camping out by the exits, we were able to hand out thousands of booklets.

We were giving out why-vegan-style booklets made by Vegan Outreach. There are 3 dedicated dudes who are doing multiple stops on this tour (Nick, John & David, you rock), and there were three of us from Mass who were just joining for the day. Between the 6 of us, we handed out 11,000 booklets total. Eleven thousand. That’s nuts.

Of course, not all of those people are going to read the booklet. Many will throw it away or leave it under the seat in their car. But if just half of them read it, that’s still a huge number of people who are learning about factory farming.

Animal liberation is a big goal. There is no single action that anyone can take to get us there. Leafleting about veganism is one way that we can break down this big challenge into smaller, more manageable, tasks.

Think about it this way: Imagine that a measly 2% of the kids to whom we gave booklets decide to make a change in their lives and go vegan. That would mean there are now 220 new vegans as a result of our leafleting tonight.

That is a huge deal.

The purpose of the event was to raise awareness and money to help provide veterinary care, housing, food , and a peaceful life for the animal residents, who have come from factory-farm conditions and/or were previously abused, neglected or abandoned.

The event featured music, yoga sessions for kids & grown-ups, children’s activities, reiki/massage/healings, vendors from various animal welfare organizations and other non-profits. VegWorcester was among the groups tabling, handing out outreach literature, selling vegan books, pins and t-shirts. A VegWorcester-led group even rode their bikes from Worcester to the event! *high fives* Some of the same folks who were at Worcester VegFest were also at Farm Fest, including Massachusetts Animal Rights Coalition, Vegetable Circus doing a fun kid-friendly show, and Like No Udder vegan soft-serve ice cream truck, just to name a few.

Whole Foods (Bellingham, MA) gave out free plates of healthy vegan food to FarmFest attendees. The highlight was a colorful salad with greens and berries, topped with tofu and a strawberry dressing. They also served up a quinoa/eggplant mix, cannellini beans and veggies, bread with two choices of hummus, and completed it with PopChips Salt & Pepper potato chips, and bottles of Adina Holistics Herbal Elixir.

Some of us got a chance to visit with the baby chicks the sanctuary just received from a local post office where someone had mailed them. Its scary to think that live birds can be legally shipped through the mail and what might have happened in transit. The chicks were so small, sweet and fragile! They ran around excited and eager, happy to feel the freedom of their new peaceful farm life.

Some of the residents on the farm include animals like goats, cows, pigs, llamas, chickens and even a mini horse! It was inspiring to see how happy and relaxed the animals were, and inspiring to see the important work going on at Maple Farm. We encourage you to like Maple Farm Sanctuary’s Facebook page, visit the farm, donate and volunteer!

UPDATE (May 19, 2011): Loren King wrote back to explain her comment about veganism & protein: “I received many emails about the protein question, all very informative. I am convinced! However, just to be clear, my point was about the film solely … I felt the film needed to make this point clearer as it is a big one for those considering a vegan diet. I felt the film made it seem a little too simple; it was my only issue with an otherwise excellent film.”

On the heels of Robert Ebert giving his endorsement of Forks Over Knives and veganism, The Boston Globe published a more tranquil (but still favorable) review of the new pro-vegan film: Documentary argues virtues of a vegan diet by Loren King.

From The Globe’s review:

What “An Inconvenient Truth’’ did for global warming, Lee Fulkerson’s persuasive documentary does for a vegan diet.

…

So why don’t more Westerners realize the benefits of eating less dairy and animal protein? Experts interviewed in the film cite the corporate interests of big agriculture, which have influenced official nutrition guidelines for decades. But “Forks Over Knives’’ doesn’t rail against any of this. The health experts urge Americans to wake up and take control of their diets and their health.

The review does include one strange part at the end. King writes, “At times this simple advice seems a little too simple; it’s not clear how, exactly, a vegan diet supplies enough protein and other nutrients over the long term and not much is made about other factors that contribute to grave illnesses.”

I understand it’s just a film review, but I’m always a little surprised when I hear people asking vegans & vegetarians, “Where do you get your protein?” Getting protein in a vegan diet is easy peazy. Just eat a varied diet and your golden. In fact if you google that question, you’ll get an article on the T Colin Campbell Foundation that answers exactly that question (in more detail than you would ever need). Maybe my answer is simple, but the it’s not a complicated problem. Have you ever heard of people getting sick because of protein deficiency? I’m sure there are some people, but I hear a lot more about heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.

It’s too bad that the only place showing this film is the Kendall Square Cinema in Cambridge. Based on the reviews, it may be worth the trip.

There is a chill in the air this holiday season, and it’s not just from the wintery weather!

Did you know that more than 50 million animals are killed each year to produce fur products? Aside from the ugly horror of fur coats, there are fur scarves, hats, fur-lined boots and mittens made off the backs of dead animals. That offensive strip of fur trim isn’t just “left over” from coat-making either. Thousands of animals are killed simply to provide fur-liners and trim for the winter season.

Massachusetts Animal Rights Coalition (MARC) is hosting a peaceful anti-fur protest at the Greendale Mall (7 Neponset Street, Worcester, MA) this Sunday, December 5th from 1-2:30pm and members of VegWorcester will also be attending. Those interested in participating should dress warm and meet up on the sidewalk at the mall entrance where the cars enter. Literature and banners will be provided. To RSVP, get more info/directions email rayshick@msn.com

Local fur is usually made from catching wild animals in traps. Fur traps are cruel and painful devices, leaving many animals to chew their limbs off in attempts to escape and others to die from blood loss while waiting for a trapper to retrieve them. Traps also unintentionally trap other animals in the process, with many of them being discarded as “trash,” such as domestic cats, dogs, and small wildlife. In China, many furs are made from cats and dogs, and are shipped overseas with inaccurate labels, so it’s hard to say for sure what “pet” you’re wearing on your back…

Farmed animals are bred for fur and endure a lifetime of horrors. Minks are the most frequently farmed fur-bearing animal. Foxes, rabbits, chinchillas, beavers, raccoons, and lynxes are also subjected to the fur industry. These unique creatures are held captive in small cages, suffering much physical and mental stress. Many animals in the wild enjoy snuggling together for security and warmth while they sleep (just like many humans do!), but in these tiny cages they will never know the security of togetherness or any sense of peace.

The abysmal killing methods used to keep the fur in tact are gruesome and not always effective on first try. Animals that are trapped often do not die right away and are forced to endure beatings or strangulation. Farmed animals are often anally electrocuted, gassed, or have their necks snapped. With questionable effectiveness, some animals wake up during the skinning process.

Fur is not fashionable. Compassion is fashionable! Make a statement this year and say no to fur & fur trim! Not sure what to do with grandma’s dated hand-me-down furs? Try donating them back to the animals with a project like The Humane Society’s “Coats for Cubs.” Wildlife rehabilitators use the furs to warm and comfort orphaned and injured wildlife.

Fur products are not welcome in our city or anywhere else! Don’t support stores that sell fur. The holiday season is about togetherness, so get together this Sunday Dec 5th (1:00pm-2:30pm) at the Greendale Mall in Worcester, MA to SAY NO TO FUR!

12:00 The Environment and Animal Agriculture
Martin Rowe

Which is more destructive to the environment—what you eat or what you drive? What’s more effective in slowing global warming, eating local or eating fewer or no animal products? The answers may surprise you. Martin Rowe, senior fellow at New York-based policy “action tank” Brighter Green offers compelling evidence of how animal agriculture is at the root of a host of environmental problems, including deforestation in the Amazon, desertification, and climate change. It’s also a key element in achieving global food security and equity. At the same time, however, meat consumption is soaring as McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King and huge “protein producers” like Tyson and Cargill expand into markets in Asia, Latin America, and even Africa. It’s not all doom and gloom, however. Just as we can develop alternatives to fossil fuels, we can also change our agricultural practices and eating habits. It all comes down to recognizing the true costs of our lifestyles and adjusting policies and practices accordingly.

In 1994, Martin Rowe co-founded the monthly magazine Satya, and was its editor for five and a half years. In 1999, he co-founded Lantern Books, a publisher of books on vegetarianism, animal advocacy, spirituality, and natural healing, and is its Director of Publishing. Rowe is editor and publisher of The Way of Compassion:Vegetarianism, Environmentalism, Animal Advocacy, and Social Justice, and author of Nicaea: A Book of Correspondences.

Martin Rowe was born in England and educated at Oxford University. He came to the United States in 1991 and completed a master’s degree at New York University.

Lantern Books publications on vegetarianism, animal advocacy, and environmentalism will be available at their table in the exhibitor room all weekend along with information from Brighter Green.

When we heard Honor Roll Productions was putting together the Open Road Music & Arts Festival, VegWorcester was one of the first to jump in and take part in what is being described as “Worcester’s first sustainable and earth-friendly music and arts festival.” We were excited to partake in some vegan outreach and check out the first of what will become an annual event!

Worcester locals headed over to Institute Park this past Saturday, September 4th to enjoy a sunny afternoon of 10+ musical acts, visual arts, fun for the kids, vegetarian food and a vast array of eco-friendly vendors. Among the green-oriented goals of Open Road Festival was bio-diesel generated power for the sound system, recycle bins and organic/recycled promotional materials.

At the VegWorcester table we met many attendees and other vendors who were equally interested in environmental issues and the music as well as trying our free vegan food! At our table we gave out free samples of Thai Peanut and Teriyaki Primal Strips, a meatless vegan jerky voted best new vegetarian snack by VegNews magazine. We also handed out vegan dark chocolates by the company Endangered Species. Their chocolates are ethically-traded and 10% of net profits are donated to help support species, habitat and humanity. We even had some Oreo cookies to share with attendees, based on the thought that many people already eat them and are shocked to find out that they are veg-friendly!

Armed with brochures about reducing cruelty to animals and free vegetarian starter kits, we shared the message of living a veg lifestyle in Worcester and received great feedback and email list sign-ups. One couple said their son had become vegetarian in the past year and they were impressed by how natural the transition had been. Other festival attendees said they enjoy veg food, but haven’t made the jump to preparing and cooking the food themselves. I was excited to share my new Worcester-oriented vegan blog (http://vegpanda.blogspot.com,) hoping to inspire others to experiment with recipes or try some of Worcester’s many vegan restaurant options.

Among the food vendors at Open Road were Loving Hut, a local vegan favorite, (located on Chandler St.) They served up a good mix of crispy appetizers to compliment the tasty rice & lo mein. (Be sure to come to one of the Loving Hut buffet VegWorcester fundraisers. They occur monthly and are only $10!) To add to our excitement about the veg food options on Saturday, there were delicious veggie dogs for sale at the cart parked just outside the gates! The avocado, tomato and onion toppings were a nice surprise and made for a unique vegan option that many seemed to enjoy.

Check out Worcester Mag’s Open Road review online with a write-up towards the end about our table!

Finding tasty vegan food at restaurants is rarely a problem, especially in Worcester. These days nearly every restaurant has good veg options on their menu. Last Spring VegWorcester printed a large number of veg dining guides and distributed them to curious Worcesterites. We are now on the third annual printing of the Guide to Vegetarian Dining in Worcester. Want to help? Look through our online listing at VegWorcester.com/restaurants and see if there are any good spots missing. Send any tips to info@VegWorcester.com or comment below.

2009 Edition: A Huge Success

Last year’s print edition featured 26 listings and a handful of events. We distributed a total of 8,000 copies–5,000 full color copies and 3,000 black and white copies. These guides are a great tool for showing Worcesterites that being vegan is an easy way to help animals and the reduce our ecological impact. It’s also a great way to send some love to local biz that feature vegan items on their menus.

Over the course of a year, we handed out the 8k guides while tabling at community events, at shows, on college campuses, in Worcester highschools, at our vegan feed-in’s, and at lots of other events. You can download a pdf of last year’s guide.

Going bigger, going bolder

This year we’re going bigger with the guide. To start, we’re going to double our color printing to 10,000 copies. That means that as we get closer to publishing it, we’re going to need to ask more of y’all to step up and volunteer to distribute it. Look out for more details soon.

Post your tips!

So if you know any solid, veg-friendly restaurants, cafes, bakeries or other spots in the Worcester area, post them here. Or send an email to info@VegWorcester.com.

The Vegan Bus crew is coming to Worcester this Sunday, August 29 to give away free samples of vegan baked goods in Elm Park, play some music, then go to Loving Hut for a special lunch and short presentation. You should come out for the fun. Meet them in Elm Park at 11am or swing by Loving Hut on Chandler at Noon for a presentation and lunch. (See schedule below.)

Based out of Northampton, MA, The Vegan Bus is a big old school bus that drives around to community events, advocating veganism. They giving out free sample of tasty food (much like our vegan “feed-ins” in Worcester) and encourage people to think of the animals confined in factory farms. The bus itself runs on waste vegetable oil, collected from local restaurants.

What’s the Vegan Bus All About?

If you’ve been to Loving Hut in Worcester, you’ve no doubt caught a glimpse of Supreme Master TV (SMTV). With two giant flat-screens playing it all the time, it’s hard to miss. SMTV recently did a short film about the vegan bus that explains what the project is all about. They’ll be showing it at the Sunday event, but you can also check out the video on the TheVeganBus.com.
