Is The Goode Family Good?
Posted by Drew.
There’s a new animated show about a vegan family now airing on ABC. The Goode Family comes from Mike Judge, the creator of Beavis & Butthead and King of the Hill. The show is currently on its 6th episode and it has been interesting so far. The concept is that it’s a family full of Lisa Simpsons. Or think of it this way: it’s the complete opposite of the American Dad family.
Here’s a clip explaining it:
I like it. A good friend of mine has been following it closely and sent me this review of the latest episode:
Episode 6 of The Goode Family (about a vegan family) was great.
Topic – Freeganism (Only using the world’s waste as a means of sustainability)
He really does a good job at poking fun at the question, “How small can you
possibly make your carbon footprint?” and does so in a well informed manner–
probably a good idea since a lot of veg*n heads would be interested in the
show to some extent.I haven’t finished weighing in on how I feel about this show– poking fun at
vegans in a way that says, “they’re vegan because they’re kooky” is hard. There are two real ways this point can be taken:
On the one hand, it could be that the family is kooky because it’s a light and
funny TV show by Mike Judge. On the other hand, you could kindle some anti-
vegan ignorance, saying that all vegans are kooky.Anyways, I’m gonna stick with this show and see how long it lasts.
Thanks for letting me post this, Duckie!

I believe the show’s intention is the former- the Goode family is kooky and they just happen to be vegans.
If there’s ever a Goode Family episode the VegWorcester readers should check out, it should be this Friday’s:
“A Goode Game of Chicken” – (Friday 7/10 on ABC 8:30/7:30c)
After getting duped into eating “meatless” chili (with chicken in it), Gerald takes on a local BBQ restaurant owner, Cranky. Gerald is then forced to enter a chili-cook off competition in order to win the family dog back.
It’s light-hearted while still treating the vegan lifestyle with respect. How often are “veg*n heads” represented (and promoted positively) on a network prime-time show these days? This show is at least doing something different than the stale formulaic sitcom.
However many holy words you read,However many you speak,What good will they do you If you do not act on upon them?
