Oprah Supporting Animal Cruelty (And Gross Food)
Posted by Drew.

Gross! Oprah Winfrey is now doing promotion for KFC. On her website she’s offering a coupon for some sort of deep-fried bucket of chicken parts. Ick. This is shocking considering Oprah’s history of support for animal welfare. Last year she even dabbled in veganism. So why is Oprah supporting such a cruel company? And why is she encouraging her fans to eat such unhealthy gunk?
KFC Abuses Animals
For over 5 years now, PETA has headed up a campaign to get the fried chicken company to improve conditions for the birds raised in KFC factory-farms and killed in KFC slaughterhouses. All they want is for KFC to adopt the animal welfare program which was developed by five members of its own animal welfare board. Sounds reasonable to me.
Oprah and Veganism
In May 2008 Oprah went vegan for 21 days as a part of some kind of “cleanse”. She ate healthy, vegan food every day and avoided alchohol. She blogged about it daily and commented on how eating vegan was a healthy and satisfying way to live. “Wow, wow, wow! I never imagined meatless meals could be so satisfying. I had been focused on what I had to give up… ‘What’s left?’ I thought. Apparently a lot. I can honestly say every meal was a surprise and a delight,” she said after a few meals. But now she’s supporting KFC?
Texas Cattlemen vs Oprah
Oprah’s involvement in animal issues and vegetarianism goes even further. In 1996 Oprah renounced hamburgers after hosting Howard Lyman on her talk show. Lyman is the author of Mad Cowboy and founder of Earthsave International. He’s a former Texas cattle rancher turned vegan activist who appeared on the show to talk about the mad cow outbreak. As a result the National Cattleman’s Beef Association sued both of them under some weird Texas law about “food disparagement”. Winfrey and Lyman were both found not guilty. Oprah stuck with Lyman and held her ground. Very admirable. So what’s going on now?
Oprah, what are you doing?
“How can you say you’re trying to spiritually evolve, without even a thought about what happens to the animals whose lives are sacrificed in the name of gluttony?” Exactly. Oprah, you asked that question. Now it’s time for you to answer it. Does it just come down to the bottom-line? Is this all about money? Don’t you have enough?
If you’re on twitter, send a message to Oprah: @oprah. Tell her to stop supporting KFC. While you’re at it, follow me: @drewSaysGoVeg.
(Note: I originally wrote this for the care2 causes blog, but they decided to pull it. They said it wasn’t “light-green” enough.)

What does “light-green” mean?
Not really sure… I think the realty is that they think that their audience really likes Oprah. Who knows?
