Victory: BOCA Goes Egg-free
Posted by Drew.

A couple weeks ago I posted an article here about BOCA considering going egg-free. Well, yesterday the company announced that they are making the compassionate decision and phasing out all egg ingredients by the end of 2009.
This comes after only two weeks of activists and consumers making phone calls, sending emails and writing letters to the veggie-burger company. The good news came in yesterday in an email to Compassion Over Killing, a DC-based grassroots animal-rights organization. A representative from the veggie-burger company wrote:
“…I am pleased to let you know the BOCA brand will be eliminating eggs in all of its products by the end of this year. We anticipate all BOCA products will be egg free in 2010.”
Whether or not you choose to eat eggs, this is a big victory for animals. 95% percentage of all the eggs produced in this country come from battery-cages–tiny, barren wire cages where birds are not given enough room to turn around, spread their wings, or do anything that is natural to them. For every egg, a hen is kept in intense confinement for somewhere around 36 hours. Egg production is a cruel industry.
Will BOCA products now be all vegan? Unfortunately, it is unlikely. On their website, BOCA lists 14 products that include eggs in the ingredients list. 4 of the those products also contain cheese or milk products, so after BOCA gets rid of the eggs they will offer 10 more vegan items. Although there will be a handful of BOCA products that are still TNV, a majority of their products will soon be vegan.
I’m going to eat a BOCA chicken patty to celebrate.

This is amazing news for hens! (and me, of course who is always looking for more vegan products to choose from) I hope other companies like BOCA (Morningstar Farms, Quorn, etc) follow suit and stop using eggs too! CONGRATS to Compassion Over Killing for making this happen
Very nice blog you have here, Drew. I like that it focuses on veg stuff in Worchester, Ma. Oh and found you via @mgonyeo on Twitter. Is this site part of a network? A veg city network.
I’m thinking of maybe creating one for my hometown, let me know.
Missy.
I’m only a vegetarian, not a vegan, but I’m glad to hear the same food I eat can now accommodate my vegan friends as well. Thanks for the update!
