Telegram & Gazette Takes On “Sea Kitten” Meme

Posted by .

This weekend George Barnestorming of the T&G published a weird, maybe-sarcastic/maybe-half-serious rant about the recent “Sea Kitten” meme. If you’re going to read it, I’m warning you it is pretty confusing. It reads like a Toni Morrison, stream-of-consciousness short story about what he ate for dinner.

In case you haven’t been following this Sea Kitten business, I’ll fill you in. A couple of months ago PETA started trying to re-brand fish. You know, the animal. It’s a part of their Fishing Hurts campaign. They sent out hundreds of press releases and probably staged some cheeky, eye-catching demonstrations. The whole idea is to encourage us re-think how we relate to fish. The fact is that fish look very different to us, but PETA is right that we ought to still take their interests into account.

The fishing industry is barbaric. Their trollers sweep up millions of fish and other animals. When the nets are pulled up to the surface, thousands of animals die a painful death of decompression and suffocation. What for, fishsticks?

The “Sea Kittens” thing is another example of PETA doing something wacky to catch the attention of the media and then trying to hit us with a message. And I love it. It’s a funny and cute way to remind us that fish, like all other animals, are interesting, intelligent creatures who wish only for us to leave them alone.
