BOCA Considers Going Egg-free
Posted by Drew.

Just two weeks after announcing a public campaign to pressure BOCA to stop using eggs in their veggie burgers, vegan activists are now calling for a temporary moratorium. Turns out Boca was so inundated with emails and phone calls that the company announced that they are now considering going egg-free. They said,
“BOCA is committed to meeting the needs of our vegan consumers. We are actively working on this matter. While this process takes time we will be able to share an update by March 20, 2009.”
Boca is probably the largest and most successful veggie-burger company out there. Their products have done a tremendous amount towards making veg food more accessible. So why would a company seems to be committed to veg food use eggs from battery-caged hens?
The reality is that the vast majority of eggs produced in this country come from hens who are confined in barren wire cages that give them no more than 70 or so square inches of space–that’s smaller than size of a sheet of paper. If you’re eating eggs, chances are very good that they came from hens who were intensely confined for the entire duration of their lives.
So after only a couple of weeks of customers calling and writing to Boca, requesting that the veggie-burger giant makes all of their products entirely-free of animal products, the company is taking some time to figure out a plan. There’s no guarantee that they will agree to going egg-free, but it’s good news that they’re considering it. Keep checking back for updates. Once Boca responds, we’ll post the news.
